Italy’s Costanza Laliscia clinched individual honours riding Sacha El Kandhaar at today’s Meydan FEI Endurance European Championship held at the iconic Euston Park in Suffolk, UK. Team victory went to Spain, in a day of fantastic competition that saw dramatic twists of fate for riders and teams.

A cohort of 63 combinations set off on the 160 Km ride, in near perfect conditions and the early leaders, headed up by Italy’s Carolina Tavassoli Asli riding Sequinte formed a clear breakaway group from the second loop onwards. Tavassoli Asli remained in the lead until Gate 5 but slowed in the final loop with Laliscia coming over the finish line packed with fans to take the win and Spain’s Paula Muntala Sanchez finishing in silver place on T’Aime De Coeur. Shortly after coming in third, Tavassoli Asli was disqualified*, allowing Spain’s Jaume Punti Dachs into bronze position on Echo Falls.

There was further drama in the team competition, which kept everyone guessing until the majority of riders were home. France got team silver and as the atmosphere built there were multiple possibilities for bronze but it was Germany that secured the final podium position.

The Championship had a completion rate of 49% and the final riders came home in darkness to an appreciative crowd, some 14 hours 16 minutes after the 07:00 hrs start. A true feat of endurance.
Home nation Great Britain saw four out of five starters successfuly home and registered their first successful team finish since 2010.

Nick Brooks-Ward, Event Director: “What an incredible day of sport! Euston Park was absolutely electric today with so many fans supporting the riders and teams and a competition that kept everyone guessing until the end. All horses came home safely and it was evident that their welfare was paramount to everyone involved. “
I am hugely grateful to all of the officials and stewards who worked so hard all day, and to the competitors and their teams who brought such a great spirit to this Championship.”

Manuel Bandeira de Mello, FEI Endurance Director: “It’s been a fantastic day of endurance riding and I have been delighted to see such a fair competition with excellent standards of horse-care and some very happy horses.”
Full results are available HERE and the presentations will take place on Sunday as part of the third day of the HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum UK Endurance Festival.
